Jenrick extends ban on evictions and notice periods

The ban on evictions extended for another 4 weeks and new 6 month notice periods to be in place until at least 31 March 2021.

The Government announced yesterday that the ban on evictions in England is now due to be extended yet again.

Eviction notices were due to resume on Monday 22nd February, but will now be prohibited until at least 31st March. This brings England in line with bans already in place in Wales and Scotland until end of March.

The National Residential Landlords Association estimate 800,000 private renters had built up arrears since the ban came into force, whilst research from Shelter showed almost 445,000 private tenants in England had fallen behind on their rent or been served with some kind of eviction notice in the last month alone.

However, exemptions were introduced in January enabling landlords to evict tenants who have accrued six months’ or more of rent arrears, even if they were built up during lockdown. As time goes on and the lockdown continues, increasing numbers of landlords are going to have no choice but to seek eviction under these rules.
